I recommend VLC
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ if you prefer a OS with backdoors which spies on you (=windows variant).
I use
http://kaffeine.sourceforge.net/ myself (Only for variants of the GNU operating system).
I have yet find find a media file which can't be played in both these players.
