In the 1300s people didn't have adequate knowledge of the world outside them (no adequate mass-media, etc), or any working secular models in multiple nations. 1300's was 200 years after the Vikings has set foot in N America after Marco Polo had gone to China. In fact by 1300's trade routes between Europe and east Asia were well established.
How about just 300 years ago when they were burning girls for being witches. Or is ignorance of the outside world still an excuse for Christian atrocities?
