i had the same decision to make - unfortunately the clinic i use has two vets and one told me to put her down because in his opinion she would not recover and the nicer one who had known my dog since she was a puppy and knew I didn't want to let her die until i was sure she wouldn't recover told me I wasn't doing the wrong thing by keeping her going, that she wasn't in pain and she might recover - so I waited until the last possible moment. I don't know, dogs can't talk, her last 6 weeks were not good but she wasn't in pain, just fucked up and bewildered why she was so sick.
it does sound to me like in CJ's case it might be time to let her/him go peacefully. doesn't sound like she's ever going to recover enough to be happy and comfortable.
such a brutal thing to have to decide - but we treat our pets better and with more humanity than we do ourselves - humans should have the same option pet owners have when a human is suffering and there is no hope.
you're doing the right thing either way you decide - you don't know what CJ wants, the will to survive is strong for humans and animals, she might if she could communicate say she wants to hang in or she could say she wants to go now.
