I'm going to guess that they do it because it keeps their thread on the front page. They try and get the point they want to make across in the thread title, and the contest whores keep it bumped on the front page, kind of like a sticky without having to pay for a GFY banner. If an actual webmaster participates in the contest it's just a bonus. I do find it amusing that there are people with 30,000+ posts in those threads that I have never heard of or seen post in any other thread...
