I always thought that these things should be all or nothing, or at the very least, a couple of free drinks per person. When we sponsored like that, I hated the way people would suck up just for a free drink.

This was supposed to be a small local gathering and it's going to be way bigger than expected...

The problem with open bar, (which are not so frequent these days), you have no control whatsoever on how much it will cost at the end of the night... I've seen many "bad surprises" over the year at different industry events. The sponsor is expecting to spend a X or Y thousands, then the bill adds up to 10 times the projected budget, while many peeps can't even tell you who was paying for them at the end of the evening ...
