The first unix account I got was in 89 or so, from some guy who knew some guy who would give you an account on the local university shell server if you gave him $20. It wasn't until many years later I realized it was just a random who admin'd for them who was making money on the side because nobody had any idea what was going on.

It sure was magical then. SLIP access was coveted, and ppp was a glimmer in someone's eye.

And I got my c64 warez from an ftp site at MIT!

Those were the days.
