Agreed. Unless you are carrying your house on your back don't bother.
The best hotel in BKK is the Peninsula...But it is on the wrong side of the river. Go for a place like Plaza Athenee near the Skytrain if you are not staying with your Cousin. It's also close to the Siam Paragon shopping center where you can buy anything.
