Lots of the space shuttle runs on water. In reality it is not that hard of a process. Minor amount of electricity separates the hydrogen from the oxygen. Hydrogen is used and walla your waste is water.

Downside is it can be a slow process unless you have good amounts of storage and high voltage. Then it also is cost prohibitive to mass manufacture for every day use just yet.

Now want interesting there is a car in Germany right now I think, with both India and Mexico ordering personalized plants. This car runs on air. Yup good ole fashion normal air. Has a good range and speeds up to 70mph. Downside is getting stations to adapt and carry the right compressors and quick fill tanks. Otherwise your looking at a few bucks to fill up and have a range of 150 miles. If you want longer range they have an air/gas hybrid. Uses air until that runs out and then the engine kicks in which also powers a compressor which in turn begins to refill the air tank. Almost triples the range. So far they say prices should be between 7,000 for a compact, to 25,000 for a four door family vehicle.
