Just because there is the potential for lasting mental anguish does not mean it's okay to punish the accused for the rest of their lives and to assume they could strike again at any moment.
Now if you want to turn the sex offender lists back into what they were originally intended for, child sexual predators, then maybe we can talk. As it stands right now, a man who rapes a 12yo has the same status as a guy who takes advantage of a drunk adult woman. What we really need is a system that classifies various degrees of sexual offenses.
