No, it does not matter what TLD you have, in international search engines. For example, something.com will not do any better than something.info in google.com

But, when it comes to country specific search engines .. then yes, it does matter. For example something.co.uk would perform better than all others in google.co.uk and, something.ca will perform better than all others in Google.ca
