Stepping back a little bit further, the infighting among smaller europen countries and backass republics made them ripe picking for Hitler... when he first acted, nothing was done, diplomacy was the order of the day, WWI was a bitter fresh memory, people wanted to avoid another major war.
Yet if he was stopped then, it would have cost many less lives. I could have also left him in power to act later, who knows
This history lesson is well remembered, and applied today. So regardless of what you think, that is why we are obligated to interfere where "hotspots" which crop up, and banana republics get out of line.
It is also why Sadam ultimately must go, one way or another. He's a wannabe-hitler, with weapons that could pose a problem for a lot of countries in the region. He would try and gain favour (among arabs) by attacking israel. But make no mistake his goal (unrealistic as it may be) is to make war and control whichever arab countries in the area, that he could defeat.
