Actually I've been around the Middle East a bit myself. I've been to Pakistan, Lebanon, Saudi, the UAE (although I didn't include them on the list of countries I dislike?) but not Afghanistan. Along the way I've met more than enough good Sunni 'religious' Muslims from the said countries (the non-terrorist type obviously) to know it most definitely is not a culture or religion that fits in with my world view. There are decent aspects to their culture, such as their hospitality generally speaking, but for the most part they live in a very small world which is ruled in almost every sense by their religion. Even those who are not religious are forced to comply (or at least pretend to comply) with the fasting, praying, etc dogma. Ib might add (as no doubt you'd agree) that I don't particularly like Christian fundamentalists either.
