I used to date a guy who made horror movies / did special effect makeup etc. We never wound up going out to NZ, but I used to talk to Fran on the phone every now and then. He had already put out Heavenly Creatures (still my favorite Peter Jackson movie) and was getting big studio attention. He put a deal together to do King Kong back in the mid 90s, but they tabled it because of the Godzilla production with Mathew Broadrick.

After we broke up there was no reason for me to keep up contacts, but I wonder if Kong would have been better if they would have let him put it out then vs now. I think Kong suffered from too much budget, too much freedom, too much time to write and rework the script.
