I'll never forget it. I had moved to California in my early 20's and was just having genuine Mexican cuisine for the first time. My girlfriend had one of those super hot caballero peppers or however you spell it and she said the way you eat them is with one quick large bite and then drink your margherita to wash it down.
I had already had a couple margheritas so I was buzzed and didn't realize what she was about to pull on me. I took this big Mexican nuclear pepper whole in my mouth and chomped on it.
Needless to say I was on the floor gagging and choking in 1 second and it fell like someone had just stuck a hot iron in my mouth. Personally I thought it was a nasty prank, but all our friends were laughing their heads off watching me writhing in pain.
My mouth was sore for days from it.
