Incidentally, the Scoville Scale is the measure the hotness of pepper.. so you can know exactly how hot something you've eaten was in relation to other stuff.

The score itself gauges of the amount of capsaicin, the chemical that produces the heat sensation. Here are some common ones:

Bell Peppers = 0 -> 150

Jalapeno's = 3,000 -> 5,000

Chipotle = 10,000 -> 15,000

Tabasco = 30,000 -> 50,000

Thai peppers = 50,000 -> 75,000

Habanero = 100,000 -> 350,000

Savina Habanero = 577,000 (hottest ever)
