A little reported factoid in this case is that some family member passed by the house and saw Laci's drapes closed early the day of the crime. Apparently she always opened them first thing in the morning.
If that is true, I think he very well might have done it. If we assume she wasn't there to open her drapes that morning or was incapacitated, he had a window of opportunity big enough to do the deed carefully, without leaving much evidence. In that case the fishing trip to Berkeley would have been purely a decoy stunt, and a pretty good one.
