Hahahaha.
$3,000 per soldier? Maybe if you're talking leaving everything behind and running for the nearest plane/ship, and then you've got to take into account the amount of lost equipment.
Bush is an idiot, but even he wouldn't be staying in Iraq for shits and grins. Everyone knows it's a clusterfuck out there, but the mistake was made when we went in. It's easy to jump on the bandwagon and cry about new requests for money, but that money isn't exactly going toward gold-plated toilets for the presidential washroom.
Let's say we wanted to just cut and run. Full withdrawal from Iraq; all US troops and equipment. I'd be amazed if we could do it at a cost less than a 200% increase in the number of troops out there, and over $100bn, just for withdrawal. That's "Screw you guys, we're going home", and loading up everything and heading home. Mind, that's doing it in a manner that's relatively safe for our troops and equipment, so we could probably shave some cash off if we're willing to cut corners there.
Of course, we could just drop everything and pretend we never went out there. Really, those soldiers out there are just going to cost us even more in the long run, if we bring them back. Better to let them learn Arabic and find a hut to crash in til they can milk enough goats to buy a plane ticket home.
