I do agree, there is a very fine line for sure

luckily I usually know at least 80% of the artists on my mixed cd's personally and they ALWAYS get a copy of the mix when it is done, but then there is the whole issue with using artists like nine nich nails and gorillaz on there, both of those remixes were bootlegs, but those bootlegs eventually were picked up by the main artists and distributed because the artist liked them so much, so the artist has to realize that their bootleg mixes are on mix cd's everywhere, and there is never any word on their feelings about it

in all honest, i think it boils down to the fact that piracy and real legal issues are much more pressing to a music artist than a mix cd that is being handed out, and the majority of the money that artists make from dj's is from the dj buying the record/cd/mp3 and also from fees paid by clubs for playing the music, so if they squash the dj mix cd then the dj's will get less gigs, the clubs will play less of that artists music, etc....it would be like a domino effect...so, the dj mix cd is usually an essential part of the structure
