not only Google likes CSS (well, at least doesn't dislike it) but if you know what you're doing you can use XHTML for better SE positioning by using a few tricks.
Personally, the last time I used the tag <table> in a page must have been like 1 year ago and never had any problem with Google. If anything, things went better.
