Yup, I figured it was something like that. I thought they were afraid I'd set myself up in the software business.
My concern is truly that they might compile some kind of spyware or other garbage along with their code. Or even IN their code.
How could you tell if sw is doing something it shouldn't? I've been told that packet sniffing my bandwidth is the only way to know and that it is difficult and expensive to do.
