Well that's just it, I'm spoiled so most cities will seem worse. Keep in mind San Jose is 2 hours from the closest beach, and 4 hours from the nice beaches... I like living here for the convenience, shopping, and nightlife, and hitting the beaches on the weekends. You just happened to mention pollution which is one of the only problems I have with San Jose.

Easily doable
If you're looking online stick to the Guanacaste province, very beautiful beaches, some of the towns have high speed now, and it's an up and coming investment area (keep in mind the prices posted online will be hugely inflated).
