Tho by sheer coincidence ended up in a forensics lab where LE had seized a load of computers and where the owners had rigged them to destroy all data in the event of a police raid (they were expecting it?? Wonder why?
). In that case the lab actually recovered all data by interesting methods - they managed to "dig down" on disk platters to extract data at certain time periods - amazing stuff.
