The adult industry as always sort of been that way though (the bs), not just the net guys...
Think about the price of porn magazines versus something like Time...or those 3 mags for $20 that come in the heavy plastic bags, most of which aren't near as "wicked, evil and salacious' as they are marketed to be
go to a video store that rents adult titles as well as regular movies and you'll see the adult titles are always higher priced...retail prices are even higher for porn than non-porn (for the most part).
Video box covers used to often contain pictures of models that weren't in the video...or they sure didn't look like they did in the video ;-)
although, far scarier and scammier than anything we could ever get away with...have you ever tried to cancel an AOL membership? if we could toss out the hoops they get away with, PPS payouts would be $125-150 ;-)
