Technically the penny is a loss leader anyways. Costs more to produce than it is worth. Also would cost more to seperate than you would get on return under almost all circumstances.

Most coins are just coated metals now adays anyways. Then again money is printed on a denim fabric (as in levi jeans) paper mixture. In essence along with the special inks it is more valuable than it is. Though that could be said of any currency if you stripped away the political power behid the paper money. Even if on a gold standard or not.

Hell can anyone tell me if the Iraqi money was on a gold standard before the war?
