I've shot pics of guys going through the rapids at Devil's Hole on jet-skiis a few times (posted some on GFY a few years back). Its wicked-ass current for sure...but if you know what you're doing and take precautions...its do-able.
Devil's Hole is unique in the world. Many rivers have level 6 rapids at some point....usually because of underlying rocks. Devil's Hole rapids are fearsome simply because of how the river narrows at this point and sheer volume of water. Its still over 50-60 feet deep through the channel. Giant boulders on each side of the river have fallen from the escarpment above over time - and resulted in the narrow passage.
Some dude not long ago rescued a couple of people in the area. He noticed they'd gotten caught in the eddys and risked his life to swim out and save'em.
Niagara's history is like that.
