Do not think this is even limited to America.
Any government that could has always used whatever means it could afford or come up with to spy on its own citizens more so than those of other countries.
The trick is to allow people to accept it in their every day life as the norm and to not question what is going on. Hell the best excuse has been used in this thread already. Why should you worry if you are not doing anything illegal.
