I know that when he climbed down from the "man" he was greeted (so to speak) by the Black Rock Rangers who took him into custody. I don't think there were many people around when he did this as it was 3:00 AM, the dance clubs were GOING OFF while the full lunar eclipse happened. So most people were either dancing, looking at the sky, or sleeping. And, it was the first night so the smallest population of the week.
The alleged arsonist claims he didn't do it and I've heard he has been arrested four more times since he was initially released. I don't agree with what the guy did. But, there is a part of me that says he embodies BMAN culture more than the current event planners. The "no rules" and "rebellious nature" that the event was founded on. Although, it isn't cool to destroy other peoples art. Even so, this guys comes off as a certifiable nut case. (He claims he had accomplices, "Black Rock Intelligence" that actually set the man ablaze and that they are all dead now after taking suicide pills. I'm not kidding.)
This is his mugshot from the night of the arrest.

And for an amusing read and some insight into how "out there" this guy is, WIRED magazine scored an interview with him just a few days after his arrest. See it here.
