Atheist here also...what sucks is that being so rationally-minded can make you depressed when you think about death, and the fact that there really is nothing after you pass.
Religion was created because of fear of death(among other more nefarious reasons). People with faith are probably less afraid of death, because they believe they're going to heaven. Santa Claus and the Tooth fairy are there too.
