I have played both sports. Football is far more challenging and difficult than Rugby. The difference grows as you move higher up.

The average NFL career is under 5 years, and many that play longer have long term health problems that require knee and hip replacements. It's a game where you can literally die or be paralyzed on any play. Guys routinely tear up knees, ankles, and shoulders. You are guaranteed to have a few guys every year seriously hurt. Concussions are common occurences.

It's not saying that Rugby isn't a tough sport, just that it doesn't have nearly the same toll on the body as football. Take a look at an injury report for the NFL and a rugby team and compare the injuries. The fact is that most NFL players could play competitive rugby, while very few rugby players could play in the NFL.
