My old office was on La Brea and Hollywood...It never ceased to amaze me the sad amount of homeless and downtrodden LA was able to generate. You would see the usual faces day in and day out through the office window, but new comers all the time, truly depressing.
Only so many people you can help, and moreover even fewer who put it to proper use or are even genuinely appreciative experience has taught me. Perhaps its a degenerative outlook, but its real. I'll still toss a few bucks from my car window to help someone panhandling on the freeway exits and such... but it's tough not to become immune to the depravity of the situation.
