That's not all about money. I ask a guy that because I like intelligent guys and I want to know if he has a job that reflects some sort of intelligence or not. Also, when you have just met someone, you are looking for some common ground to talk about, and jobs are easy to talk a little about.
I totally agree with the coffee shop, walk in the park sort of thing at first. I love those sorts of dates anyway, just sitting around, talking, and getting to know the person. You learn more about them walking through the park then you do at an expensive restuarant. People are more themselves and you know they are there because of you, not because you are buying them stuff.
