Most dogs do NOT grow out of puppiness until they are 1.5 to 2 years old.
Also, if its a male dog neutering the dog will make it much calmer if it is not.
But if you think hitting the dog while he thinks he is only playing with you is going to teach him something, its not. Would you smack a 5 year old when they came up to you laughing and all happy with a toy wanting to play? That'll teach 'em.
