WTF is the need for a 600 pixel wide image on a blog anyway? Most blogs have narrow colums & too many programs making feeds with images that are far too large for most blogs
There are lots of ways to do it. Some which have been mentioned. One I know that is one of the easier methods is to simply add no overflow (overflow hidden) to your post css or layout column. This will not size the image down but it will not stretch the layout if an image is larger than the post/column width
