My daughter has never walked in on us -- yay for bedroom doors that lock! -- but when she was 4, she knocked on the door late one night mid-coitus. I grabbed a robe, hubby covered up, and I went to the door.

"You need something, baby?" I asked her.

"No. Is Papa okay? I heard him making funny noises."

"Um, yeah. Grab your blankie and lets go sit down and talk."

I sat down with her and explained about sex in 4 year old terms, that it was "grown-up cuddles" and that it was a special thing that only grown-ups do, and that when she got a little older, I'd explain more about it. I said that people make funny noises when they do grown-up cuddles because it feels really good, like making "Yummmm" noises when you eat good-tasting food.

She nodded and accepted all this, and when I asked her if she had any questions, she said, "Uh huh. Are you and Papa gonna do that anymore tonight? 'Cause it's loud, and I wanna go back to sleep."

I thought of her Papa, lying in bed, most likely limp and slightly mortified by the kid-interruption, and said, "No, honey, not tonight."

"Ummkay," she replied, and toddled back to bed, trailing her baby blanket.

Since then, we've gone into the subject in much greater depth, and I've explained about babies, and contraception, and masturbation, and all kinds of stuff. It's never been a forbidden subject, and she's cool with coming to me and asking different questions. She has some good age-appropriate books, the best of them being "The Playbook for Kids About Sex" by Good Vibrations.
That is SUCH a good way of explaining it!

I'll have to remember that for when my future procreations start butting into my future matrimonial bliss sessions.
