Probably because these scientists are thinking more than a few years into the future. They probably recognize that even if the worlds food and disease and fuel issues are solved, we still fucked this planet up beyond repair. So trying to find some other planet that's suitable for living might be something worth looking into.
Not to mention meteors and asteroids that might be headed our way that would make all the problems previously mentioned completely obsolete.
