The EDGE network is around 200kbps. It does have Wifi, so put that in perspective. The iphone is $20 per month for unlimited internet as opposed to $30 on a Blackberry or $40 on a Treo/Blackjack.
Depends on what you want to use it for. I like it for browsing the web. Don't like texting on it. E-mail performance is kinda "meh." I've probably used more pda-style phones than everyone on this board, but I don't believe there is a single perfect device for everyone.
