My pug had major surgery when she was 13. The vet called after surgery and said she wasn't doing too well. They watched her for a few hours and then we brought her home and she was doing pretty good.
Years before that (and I forgot to bring this up before the surgery above... could have been why there was problems when she woke up) a different vet removed a tumor from her leg and said he was going to have tubes in her nose until she woke up. I don't know the precise reason for this, but you may want to ask about it. I think it has something to do with their small airways. Maybe it's just a Pug thing, or maybe it's all small dogs.
