Yes it does rarely happen. General anesthetic always carries a risk, just like it does in humans. The older the dog the more the risk.

One thing you can do is spring for the pre operation blood tests. They're not required, and cost around $50 but can identify any problems that might come up before the dog is under.

Also, follow closely the instructions from the Vet for the night before and day of the operation. No food specifically.
