I notice a lot of big fat people wear a "back brace" but it appears to me that they are trying to just rein in their out of control fat gut.

If someone says, "hey, are you trying to hide your big fat gut with that thing around your waist?" They can just claim that it is a "back brace" to provide support for their bad back.

Fat people are funny.
