True places like gas stations won't take checks anymore. 2 or 3 bad checks for them wipes out the profit they made in a week from all the checks they took.
But you can still write a check at Wal-Mart. Why? Because they know that the check fraud is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of money they'd lose if they didn't take checks anymore.
As long as you don't pay your affiliates for the sale until the check clears, it really didn't cost you any $$ to take the check signup, and in the long run you'll make more by taking them than not.

You can't pay for anything at my local Wal Mart with a check, or Canadian Tire, or business depot, or any grocery store. Those places that do take them get two pieces of id and a credit card. Staples is the only place I can think of around here that takes checks, and that may only be business checks. Some places I mentioned take them if you also have THEIR credit card.
Personally, I can't wait for a good debit card billing system. IMHO eventually checks will only be used for business to business, and maybe paying bills. Why risk it, who with money in their account has checks but doesn't have a bank card?
BTW, I'm not sure if this is true in every other country, but in Canada we can pay for basically everything with our bank card. I don't really understand how Visa can sell their check card in a country where interac is widespread. You have that through your banks in the USA, right? Come to think of it I've never tried to use my atm card down there.
