Both of my dogs are mixed-breed rescues. Check-out your local shelter(s) website and make note of some of the available dogs kennel numbers so it's a little less overwhelming when you go.
And don't limit yourself to shelters, check local rescues, and online classified ads where there are often desperate people trying to find new homes for pets before sending them to the pound.
Oh, and a spiked collar will make any breed look like a badass
