You always toss out 1-500 as a conversion ratio, all the time 1-500.
You cannot look at overall conversions these days, that's moronic to say the least. You need to address each type of traffic separately to really gauge how you are doing. Are you 1-500 on blog traffic, 1-500 on SEO, 1-500 targeted niche specific traffic, 1-500 on tgp traffic, 1-500 on mgp traffic, 1-500 on exit traffic, 1-500 on freesite traffic, 1-500 on linklist traffic, 1-500 on seeded traffic?
Each is going to convert highly different lumping them all together and saying 1-500 is not getting anywhere.
