If you just drop their connection before they get any conversation with the services, you save a tiny bit of overhead and save that slot for a more "desired" visitor. If he's got a rather large influx of this undesired traffic, it could actually be quite a large chunk of overhead in the long run saved.
You could also just shoot these into oblivion with 'route', without even using iptables. Check this out:
