The drivers for these companies have a service time goal that they need to hit. In the case of Fedex, if you are on a "before 9am" or "before 10:30" run, they have everything in their truck to deliver before that time. That may mean that they have on average 2 minutes to spend on your delivery.
They don't have time to play games. They go to the door, the ring the doorbell or knock. No answer, they door card it.
Now, if your driver came the first time and realized that the door was useless (no bell, security door, no way to ring) he probably did a straight drive past the next time knowing that it would be a waste of time. His bad, that is for sure. But not unusual in the service industry these days.
Really, it is your responsbility to make your address "deliverable" or just ask for hold at depot and go pick it up.
