Understand that I'm 45 which is why mine is so high ;) I had an individual policy for my son (cheaper to get 2 policies than a family policy) and it was under $80 even up to the time he was 20 and that was with a low deductible.
When you check into a hospital or go to the doctor's office you sign a lovely piece of paper that says YOU are ultimately responsible for the bill. That's why I like BCBS - they have always been prompt in payments (and I've had plenty of opportunity to use them). I hear nightmare stories about people being hounded by doctors/hospitals/collection agencies when the insurance company doesn't pay promptly.
Even when my son broke his arm out of state we had no problem with getting everything covered even though it was clear a hospital and doctor in South Carolina wasn't on BCBS of Georgia's provider list. BCBSGA worked with BCBSSC and everything was taken care of.
Another good "insurance policy" to take out if you're in the US and travel out of the country is insurance to get you back to the states. This one was recommended and it's what I have:
http://www.medjetassist.com/ It will bring you to any hospital you want in the US. In reading/watching travel information, this is one of the few travel insurances "experts" recommend getting.
