Here's a solution:
Move every US/British troop out of Iraq tomorrow. Stop arming Sunni militias (yes, that's what they're doing now, and those groups are still killing us)
Set up massive, livable refugee camps in friendly neighboring countries (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia). Allow every and any Iraqi access to these refugee camps along with food, water, medicine.
Let the extremists kill each other.
Encourage and fund the creation of secular political parties among the refugees. Train as many men as possible to be serious police officers.
Now you have a situation where the radicals aren't being supported by the general public out of fear of the occupiers. The refugees will be able to put pressure on and influence whatever government takes hold. Within 15 years Iraq will be a legitimate secular democracy.
Unfortunately, this is not what our government and the corporations who run it want. They want (and actively fuel) sectarian violence because they want to break up Iraq into three countries, so they can divide and rule. Our powers that be will never give Iraq's resources to the people in Iraq, no matter how many American lives it costs, no matter how much they have to rob from the American tax payer. The only way to stop this is to put the fear of the people back into the government, but we watch WAY to much TV for that to ever come close to happening.
Basically, we're fucked. The new democratic leadership in '08 are going to try to come in and look like heroes, bringing in the UN to divide up the country and bring "peace". Of course, it's all a scam and we're all fools because we pay for it.
