Actually, it's not like saying that at all. When you use a credit card you will be expected to pay the company back for the money that you borrowed. Where as with taxes you pay the money up front and for that you are provided with whatever the government decides to give you.
Further, one could live off the grid and not pay any taxes and still take advantage of all the things that the taxes pay for.
Sure nothing is free, but when you are dealing with public services we say they are free because it is not us who pay the bill for them, even though it is us who collectively pay for them.
