Man, sorry to hear that. I'm not necessarily an 'anti' fan of any particular breed. I owned 2 Rotties for many years and they sometimes get a bad rap. I mostly blame it on the owners. If you know you own a breed that has lethal potential you best ensure you train and contain your animals and treat/raise them in such a way that they are not a threat to anyone. I took this responsibility seriously since mine were puppies...no play biting, not even a little bit. As for getting loose in the neighborhood, no fuggin way.
Actually I have one now (pitt) in my neighborhood that I feel horrible, but have to call the authorities on. It's gotten loose 20x too many lately and finds itself very comfortable in my yard chasing cats, squirrels, etc. With a small child in the house I know that's a combination that can easily lead to a bad place. I'd rather not have a mauled child, a dead dog and neighbors later so I will be placing the call this week. Thanks for the reminder. :/
PS: Yes Akita's are bad ass. I grew up with a German Shepard/Akita mix. She was loyal to the family but would destroy any and all animals that made it into our backyard.
