I agree, telling an ethnic joke to friends or cursing someone racially in the heat of the moment is a far cry from heading the local KKK chapter.
I've seen Asian comedians tell jokes about how bad they drive, black comedians use the N-word, Jews telling Jewish jokes. It's a bit hypocritical to say if I tell a joke about them now I'm racist.
