No they didn't really change it. What happened was one company out of the four major record companies agreed to release their music in mp3 form. So when you buy something from that company only it can be played on anything.
Unfortunately that company only accounts for about 17% of the available music.
If only Apple would license their Fairplay DRM to other companies then people would be able to play their music anywhere. But no, they would never do that because then that would allow you to use non apple players. Heaven forbid!
